Providing Vital Community Outreach

Compassion’s local church partner in Uganda makes regular pastoral visits to check on the community. It was during one of these visits that they met four-year-old Emma and his mother. The pastor immediately recognized that Emma was severely malnourished and arranged for him to be registered with the Compassion center. Emma underwent a health check-up and received medical treatment, including extra nutrition. At the center, he received a daily meal and within two months his health had greatly improved. “Emma is a very outgoing child, and he is very intelligent,” said Center Director Zeridah. “As soon as he knew he had been registered (with the center) he became very confident with us.”

Helping Children & Families Stay Strong

Miranda attends a Compassion child development center in El Salvador. As the pandemic began to spread across the country, the center distributed hygiene kits for every child and their family. Most families, like Miranda’s have limited access to clean water. The kits include soap, hand sanitizer along with vitamins to help the children stay strong and build their immunity. “We wanted to start a preventive initiative,” said Center Director Vicky. “We wanted to strengthen the children’s immune systems and protect them from COVID-19. Even before the pandemic, it was very difficult to buy hygiene items.”

Supporting Families in Crisis

Four-year-old Habtemariam of Ethiopia is part of the Compassion Child Sponsorship Program. His mother worked as a school cook to support him and his five siblings until the global pandemic forced local schools to shut down. Without her regular income for food and rent, his mother did not know what to do. The Compassion center where Habtemariam attends learned of the family’s crisis and stepped forward to organize food plus provide money for rent. “They have rescued my children from hunger,” said Habtemariam’s mother. “I clearly see why God brought us to the church. Where would I have gone for help?”
